Two departures for 2027 — January and March

The resilience and strength of human beings can be tested in many ways, and the way certain people respond to testing times differs just as much. I have travelled through Vietnam and Cambodia twelve times over the past five years, and even knowing the little I do about their history — the heartache and the tragedies so many of their people have suffered — I am still blown away by their welcoming and open-hearted acceptance of outsiders visiting their homeland.

Turmoil and upheaval dogged both countries for over a century, and between themselves, the Chinese, French, Japanese and of course the Americans, a stable and happy existence was certainly never a given.

So seeing how these spirited people have risen above such events and continue to thrive, with smiles a mile wide, while welcoming travellers like myself from all corners of the globe with friendship and feeling.

In 2027 I am running this journey twice — once in January and again in March — so if one doesn’t suit, the other might.

A small, personally hosted group on a tour that takes in a mix of some tourist standards and some special favourites of mine that are not always on the standard tourist track.

Here are some of the highlights for you to think about

Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong

I have to be honest and say you won’t see me going for a dip in these waters anytime soon, but the fishing villages and stilt houses that line its banks contain many an interesting story or two. A highlight for me is an on-river jaunt in a hand rowed Sampan.

We will also take to the streets of Saigon on a form of transport known as a “Cyclo”, a three wheeled bicycle taxi that was introduced in the French period as a form of luxury transport, and is a really cool way to visit some of the iconic landmarks of the city.

Hoi An

Hoi An is definitely one of my favourite parts of Vietnam and of this trip. So much so that I added an extra day onto the tour here — a free day for you to really explore and get in amongst its welcoming locals.

While in Hoi An we will wander the pedestrian friendly streets wth ease while exploring Ancient Town. You will also take part in an absolute cracker of a half day gastronomical adventure: including a guided tour of Hoi An’s colourful central market, a boat trip on the Hoi An River, and then a three hour hands-on cooking class, where you will devour your creations at lunch. Hoi An is also home to some brilliant tailors and I can recommend the best for you.

Hanoi

The country’s capital, and what I like to describe as controlled chaos that doesn’t intimidate — it seems to draw you into its excitement and manoeuvring instead.

A highlight for me, and for you I believe, will be the walking foodie tour taking in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, which has an amazing history. Sometimes it’s difficult to find the local food stalls and mini restaurants tucked away in hidden alleys and sidewalks, and this night in town gives you a taste of the cuisine, the culture, the people and the language. Finishing off the night in “Beer Street” also has its bonuses!

Lan Ha Bay

Here we will be enthralled by the majestic, jaw-dropping landscape of towering karst outcrops and ever-present limestone cliffs, while we cruise the waterways on an overnight exploration of this amazing natural phenomenon.

And then Cambodia

Every time I land in Cambodia it feels familiar and easy. The heat hits first, heavy but alive. Then, as you make your way from the airport into the city centre, the vibe that makes Cambodia a must visit reveals itself again.

The smiles. The tuk-tuk drivers waving, the kids laughing in doorways, the street vendors already calling out. There’s an openness here that you feel instantly, and it pulls you in before you’ve even unpacked your bag.

I’ve explored a lot of countries, but Cambodia has a grip on me. Temples, villages and vibrant street life — and along with our stay in Vietnam, it completes the magic travel canvas.

Day by day

Day 1 — July 13th 2027 · Syd-Nairobi

Depart from your home base for your flight to Nairobi Kenya. You will likely have to have a stopover somewhere as no direct flights are available. Please make sure you arrive in Nairobi on the 13th July. On arrival we will be transferred to our overnight hotel in anticipation of our African adventure, beginning the next morning.

Day 2 — July 14th · Nairobi – Masai Mara

8am departure

Leaving Nairobi after breakfast, we travel towards Kenya’s fertile highlands and head down the rift escarpment on the road built by Italian prisoners of war during World War II. One of our favourite places to search for wildlife in Kenya is the Masai Mara National Reserve. That’s because the wildlife here is incredible, with big cats (lions, leopards and cheetahs) and elephants among the highlights. There’s a very good chance you’ll also see giraffes, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, hippos, hyenas, and, of course, impalas. And bring your binoculars, because more than 500 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve. It’s a place of beautiful savannah landscapes as well, with lots of acacia trees. Oh yes did I mention the GREAT MIGRATION? We will enjoy an afternoon game drive after checking in to our hotel and a bite to eat. This is when temperatures cool, the light becomes softer and the wildlife begins to get active. Not only will you be out when the light is best for taking photos, but it’s also one of the best times of the day for seeing the animals.

On return to our digs, we will freshen up for a beverage and dinner and revise our sightings on day one of safari!

Day 3 — July 15th Masai Mara

9am departure

Let’s face it, after your introduction to the Masai Mara yesterday, you are itching to get back out there and experience the breathtaking scenes that nature delivers. Let’s depart early for a morning game drive and see what the savannahs have in store for us. Depending on what we saw yesterday our brilliant guide Komora will aim to tick the animal boxes off for us. Let’s search for the Great Migration! We will pack a picnic lunch today and make a day of it. We will head back in the afternoon for some down time and a relaxing drink at the bar before dinner.

Day 4 — July 16th Masai Mara

Departure depending on if you Balloon

Enjoy longer in the Masai Mara National Reserve, getting to know its many natural charms. Following an early breakfast, depart on a morning game drive, returning to the camp mid-morning. After lunch, and perhaps a siesta, set off on another game drive returning to the lodge as the sunsets. Imagine being out in the soft, early morning light, wrapped in a blanket, just as the animals emerge from their night’s rest or from the shadows of their night time adventures. The world feels fresh and new on an early morning game drive, the sun has yet to beat down upon the earth, and it may end up being your favourite time to be out on safari. Today is also a chance for an optional extra Balloon Flight over the Mara,

Day 5 — July 17th Masai Mara – Lake Naivasha

Leaving the Masai Mara after breakfast, travel across the ‘breadbasket’ of Kenya, where acres of wheat and barley litter the landscape as you head north to Narok, the district headquarters of this part of Masai land. One of the most beautiful of Kenya’s Rift Valley lakes, Lake Naivasha is a pretty place where you’re likely to see hippos, and where zebras and giraffes roam the lakeshore. It’s a lovely interlude during your safari. After the early morning safari on route, we will enjoy lunch at our new hotel, followed by an afternoon cruise on the lake, and then a truly amazing experience as we walk amongst some of the iconic Kenyan wildlife (trust me it’s super safe) This is a really peaceful experience and a terrific opportunity to be at one with the animals.

Our accommodation lies on the southern shores of Lake Naivasha, with one of the best lakeside swimming pools in the area, along with a great restaurant and bar and luxurious rooms in stone bungalows. Don’t be surprised by the Waterbuck, Zebra and other animals by day and keep your eye out for Hippos at night. Do not approach them!

Day 6 — July 18th Lake Nakuru – Day Trip

830am Departure

Today we take a little day tour to a divine location about 60 kms away and was once a part of a great lake system that now stands as 3 separate lakes. Lakes Elementaita, Naivasha and Nakuru. The surrounding park is now home to over 100 endangered Rhinos, both white and black. It is also home to the Rothschild Giraffe and over 400 species of birds, including Flamingo, Pelicans, Fish Eagles and Marabou Storks. Leopards, Cheetahs and many other animals are also spotted regularly. We will enjoy another picnic lunch out on the plains! Lion free!!!

Day 7 — July 19th Amboseli National Park

830am departure Travel time approx. 5 hrs

You’re in for a real safari treat when you visit Amboseli. It’s one of Kenya’s most beautiful parks, thanks to the fact that Mt Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak (5895m), dominates most views here. Amboseli is also famous for its large population of elephants with big tusks, and you have an excellent chance of seeing lions, cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, wildebeests and many gazelles while you’re here. With 420 bird species recorded, it’s also a great place for birding. On arrival we will once again have some lunch and then we will head out for an afternoon game drive.

You’ll love the warm light and cooler temperatures as we take you out to explore on your evening game drive. This time of day is when both predators and prey are most active and it can feel as though anything could happen at any moment. This is when you’ll most enjoy being on safari. Overnight at Amboseli Kibo Safari Lodge on a full board basis.

Day 8 — July 20th Amboseli National Park

Tuck into another delightful breakfast and make sure you layer up to enjoy an early morning game drive. This is the perfect time to experience the wildlife and the landscapes they inhabit. The light is soft and warm – perfect for photography – and most animals are out and about, and active. If you’re not an early riser, you’ll definitely want to make an exception here. Back to the hotel for lunch and some time to relax and enjoy your surrounds.

We will aim to include an visit to a Masai Village while we are in the area. This is an amazing insight into the life of the Masai, one that is so far removed from anything I believe you can relate to. There is a small donation fee with this.

Day 9 — July 21st Amboseli – Tsavo NP

9am Departure

This morning, following early breakfast, and a game drive en-route to the gate, we continue to Taita Hills Sanctuary arriving for lunch at Taita Hills Safari Resort. Following lunch, transfer to Saltlick Lodge. After a short siesta, depart on an afternoon game drive, returning late afternoon. Spend the rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure, viewing game from lodge’s underground hide or from the lodge balcony.

Salt Lick Lodge is located in the heart of a private Wildlife Sanctuary which lies adjacent to Tsavo National Park, therefore playing an increasingly important role in the protection and conservation of Kenya’s wildlife heritage. The entire lodge is raised on stilts, providing 24-hour game viewing opportunities from any corner of the lodge. The rooms are built in two storey blocks from a central pod and linked together by elevated platforms – overlooking a salt slick and small waterhole. Each room is spacious and beautifully appointed, featuring exquisite ethnic décor in keeping with the Tsavo environment Rooms and have all the necessary modern conveniences. The restaurant, bar and main balconies have views over the water hole and salt lick, which is constantly in use by local park residents. There is also an underground hide for closer encounters.

Day 10 — July 22nd Amboseli

9am Departure

Today you have the option to enjoy 2 game drives or you can choose to have a little sleep in a late breakfast and spend a little relax time at the hotel. The waterhole in front of the hotel is often visited by numerous animals and you could have your own national geographic moments from the hotels viewing locations.

After lunch we will head out again and search for the latest sightings around the sanctuary, followed by a drink on the deck at sunset and dinner to follow.

Day 11 — July 23rd Taita Hills Sanctuary – Tsavo East NP and Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) is a global leader in elephant conservation and one of Africa’s most respected wildlife charities. Founded in 1977 by Dame Daphne Sheldrick, the charity was created to build upon the conservation vision of her late husband, David Sheldrick, the founding warden of Tsavo East National Park, Kenya’s oldest and largest national park. The Tsavo ecosystem remains the base for much of the SWT’s operations.

We are best known for our pioneering Orphans’ Project, a first-of-its-kind program to rescue, raise, and re-wild orphaned elephants and rhinos. Underpinning this mission, our extensive field projects, which protect wildlife and preserve critical habitats across the Kenya. Backed by decades of field experience, we are a multi-dimensional conservation organisation dedicated to tackling the greatest threats facing Kenya’s natural world, while engaging local communities and mobilising a global supporter base in the process.
Voi is the heart of the Trust’s past, present and future. 70 years ago, when David Sheldrick was the founding warden of Tsavo East National Park, he and Daphne raised their first orphaned elephants there. Since those days, generations of orphaned elephants have reclaimed their place in the wild from our Voi Reintegration Unit.

Day 12 — July 24th– Tsavo East NP

Today we will explore around Tsavo East including a visit to the amazing Lugard Falls. Tsavo East National Park is Kenya’s largest protected wildlife area, famous for its red-dust elephants, vast arid plains, and dramatic history with man-eating lions. Established in April 1948 and spanning 13,747 square kilometres, it offers a raw, remote wilderness experience positioned halfway between Nairobi and the coast. The Galana River: A permanent lifeline flowing through the flat plains to create lush riverbanks.

Yatta Plateau: The world’s longest lava flow, stretching over 300 kilometers.

Lugard Falls & Mudanda Rock: Massive rock formations and rapids where animals congregate to drink. After a full day we will gather together and have a celebratory drink or two as we prepare to move further East where our beach stay awaits!

Day 13-14 — July 25th-26th Voi – Mombasa

10am Departure

Let’s enjoy a later breakfast today as we prepare to say farewell to the rugged landscapes we have become accustomed to and head for the beach. We will make our way from Voi to Pride Inn Flamingo, aiming to reach our North beach hotel in time for lunch.

Drive time approx 4 hours then its 2 nights on the beachfront in Ocean View room on all-inclusive food and drinks.

The next 2 days are mainly for you to take in the sunshine and waters of the Mombasa coastline while reflecting on the amazing experiences you have just. North of Mombasa is a world of enthralling history and natural beauty. The coast is lined with pristine palm fringed beaches, and the calm inviting waters of the Indian Ocean. The beaches are broken by the wide mouth of Kilifi Creek, whose azure waters are a popular port of call on the international yachting circuit. The offshore reefs are alive with coral, myriad fish, sea turtles and dolphins. Both outer and inner reef walls offer world class diving with spectacular coral gardens and drop offs. Day 15 — July 27th – Mombasa to home base.

Today it’s time to bid farewell to our beachside relaxation and start the journey back to reality, and it will be a big day of travel. It’s an early start and then we will fly back via Mombasa and Nairobi to you home base. Sadly our African adventure has come to an end, but I know you will now have an insight into local life and will also have some life changing memories to share with family and friends.
